Leaf pattern - Shin Bijutsukai

Shin-Bijutsukai (New Oceans of Art) magazine emerged during a pivotal period in Japanese publishing, marking a shift when pattern and design books became standalone artistic works. Originating from the 1660s, this genre experienced a resurgence with Shin-Bijutsukai (1902–1906), reflecting a convergence of historical and technological shifts in Japanese society. The magazine's vibrant designs, influenced by Art Nouveau and Japonisme encountered by artists abroad, showcased the cross-cultural pollination of originality. Empowered by advancements in color printing, publishing houses collaborated with artists to produce zuan-chō (design books), serving both as practical guides for artisans and aesthetically pleasing objects appreciated for their own sake.
